Course Exemption/Transfer of Units
1. Course Exemption for Year 1 Students (Deadline: September 12, 2011)
Students admitted to Year 1 may apply for exemption from certain courses in the curriculum if they have taken equivalent courses in other institutions previously, but they are required to replace the exempted courses with other courses to make up for the units being exempted. However, under special circumstances, the Department/Programme Head may approve transfer of up to 15 units without the need to make up for the units exempted.
1.2 Please check out here whether the major programme allows course exemption (course replacement is required) or transfer of credits (course replacement is NOT required) before submitting application form.
1.3 Students are allowed to apply for course exemption ONCE only during their studies in the University.
1.4 The University reserves the right to refuse to grant exemption for courses which are not deemed to be equivalent to the University courses and for courses with grades below the equivalence of grade C in the University grading system.
1.5 Students may submit Application for Course Exemption - For Undergraduate Year One Students (use one form for one course prefix) together with copies of course outlines/syllabuses and academic transcripts within the first TEN days after the commencement of students' first semester of studies or no later than the deadline. However, students are advised to submit their applications as early as possible so that they can enjoy more time to complete the subsequent adding or dropping of courses before the add/drop period ends.
1.6 The application will be passed to the relevant departments for recommendation and seek the final endorsement of the Assistant Academic Registrar.
1.7 Students will be notified of the result of the application in writing.
2. Exemption from LANG1480, LANG1491 & LANG1492 (Deadline: September 12, 2011)
Students may submit Application for Course Exemption and attach copies of the course outlines/syllabuses and academic transcripts within the first TEN days after the commencement of students' first semester of studies or on or before the deadline.
The application will be passed to the Language Centre for recommendation and seek the final endorsement of the Assistant Academic Registrar.
Students will be notified of the result of the application.
2.1 JUPAS / Non-JUPAS Students
2.1.1 Exemption from English I (LANG 1491) will be granted to students who have one of the following examination grades:

grade "C or above" in HKAS "Use of English"
-
a score of 570(paper-based)/230(computer-based)/90(internet-based) or above in TOEFL
-
a score of 7.0 or above in IELTS (Academic Level)
2.1.2 No exemption from English II (LANG 1492)
2.1.3 Exemption from University Chinese (LANG1480) will be granted to students with grade "B or above" in HKAS "Chinese Language and Culture". You are required to take replacement course.
2.2 Associate Degree Holders from College of International Education (CIE)
2.2.1 If you have completed the AD Programme from CIE, exemption or transfer of unit for University Chinese (LANG 1480), English I (LANG 1491) and English II (LANG 1492) will be granted, except for those who were majoring in "Professional Accountancy".
2.2.2 For students majoring in "Professional Accountancy" in CIE Associate Degree Programme, the exemption guidelines follow the Associate Degree students of other institutions (see Section 2.3 below).
2.2.3 Please check out here whether your major programme allows course exemption (course replacement is required) or transfer of credits (course replacement is NOT required) before you submit your application form for course exemption.
2.3 Associate Degree Students of other institutions (HKU Space, CityU/PolyU/Lingnan/HKIED/CU Community College) and CIE Associate Degree Year 1 Students
2.3.1 Exemption or transfer of unit for English I (LANG 1491) will be granted to students who have taken at least two 3-unit English subjects and have attained Grade B or above.
2.3.2 Exemption or transfer of unit for University Chinese (LANG 1480) will be granted to students who have taken at least one 3 unit Chinese subject and have attained Grade B or above.
2.3.3 English II (LANG 1492) is compulsory. No exemption or transfer of unit can be granted.

2.4 Students with IB qualification
Individual assessment is needed. If you wish to apply for course exemption on the strength of your IB qualification, please submit Application for Course Exemption to Academic Registry.
3. Exemption from University's Putonghua Graduation Requirement
3.1 Putonghua Graduation Requirements and Exemption Criteria.
Students are required to reach foundation Putonghua proficiency language before they graduate. Please refer to Language Centre for more details.
3.2 Students may submit Application for Exemption from University's Putonghua Graduation Requirement to Academic Registry. Students will be notified the application result by in writing.
4. Transfer of Units (For returning exchange students)
4.1 Please submit the Application for Transfer of Units – Students Returning from Exchange in hard copies, with the official academic transcripts and course outlines/syllabuses to the Academic Registry (6/F, FSC Library) as soon as you have returned to Hong Kong.
4.2 The Undergraduate Studies Section will pass the application to the relevant departments for recommendation, and for the Assistant Academic Registrar's approval.
4.3 The Undergraduate Studies Section will notify students of the result of the application in writing.
5. Transfer of Units (For students directly admitted to Year 2 to fulfill the minor programme requirements)
5.1 For students directly admitted to Year 2 and were granted transfer of units at your admission to the University, you may check your academic transcripts and see if any course you were granted transfer of units can be used to fulfil the requirements of a minor programme. You can use 6 units out of the courses approved for transfer of units at your admission to fulfil the minor programme requirements.
5.2 Students should submit Application for Transfer of Units to Fulfill Minor Programme Requirements (For students admitted directly to Year 2) to the Academic Registry (6/F, FSC Library).
5.3 The Undergraduate Studies Section will notify students of the result of the application in writing.
