Useful Notes on Taking a Minor Programmes
1. Fulfilling the Minor Programme Requirements
1.1 You must fulfil the minor programme requirements by making use of the units for complementary studies/free electives which means if you choose a course to fulfill the minor programme requirement, its course group must be under complementary studies/free electives.
1.2 Whether you have a minor programme or not, it is compulsory of you to meet the complementary studies/free electives requirements in order to graduate.
1.3 A course cannot be double-counted as a major and minor course at the same time:
There are four scenarios:

If a major required course is also listed under your minor required courses, it may not be double counted. The units you gained on this course will serve to satisfy your major unit requirement only. It will not be counted towards the minor programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of minor elective courses to fulfill the minor unit requirement.

If a major required course is also listed under your minor elective courses, it may not be double counted. The units you gained on this course will serve to satisfy your major unit requirement only. It will not be counted towards the minor programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of minor elective courses to fulfill the minor unit requirement.

If a minor required course is also listed under your major elective courses, it may not be double counted. The units you gained from this course will serve to satisfy your minor unit requirement only. It will not be counted towards the major programme, and you have to choose another course under the list of major elective courses to fulfill the major unit requirement.

If a
minor elective course is also listed under your
major elective courses,
it may not be double counted. You may use it to fulfill either your minor or your major unit requirement.
2. Using transfer units to fulfill the minor programme requirement
Transfer courses may serve to fulfill the minor programme requirement but the number of transfer units allowed for a minor programme will be limited to not more than 6 units.
3. GPA requirement for minor programme
There is no GPA requirement specifically for the minor programme. However, a student, in order to graduate with a minor, has to:

fulfil all university general requirements,

pass all courses required in the major and minor programmes; and

attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all the courses attempted.
4. No double minor is allowed
Under the current undergraduate curriculum, complementary studies units may be used to fulfill the 15-unit requirement of a minor programme. There is no provision for double minor.
5. No guarantee of places for minor courses:
Owing to limits on class quota set by academic departments, please note that you will not be guaranteed a place for any minor course you wish to take. Successful registration to minor courses is subject to limitations on course quota, class schedule, etc.
6. Application for a minor programme
6.1 Students who have successfully accumulated 15 units required by the minor programme, you may apply for graduation with minor from 1 to 31 March of your final year.
6.2 The Academic Registry will send e-mail to all final year students to invite application for minor via the UIS. Final result will be released to the students via the UIS.
