Q: What is the eligibility to apply via JUPAS in 2012 and 2013 respectively?
A: Applications in 2012

Bachelor’s Degree Programmes (For Applicants with HKDSE results)
  1. All applicants (school and non-school applicants) who apply for admission to the full-time government-funded 4-year bachelor's degree programmes offered by the 8 JUPAS participating-institutions and to the 4-year full-time non-government-funded bachelor's degree programmes offered by OUHK on the strength of HKDSE will be considered only on the basis of their HKDSE.
  2. All school applicants as in (a) above MUST apply via their respective schools.
  3. School applicants who may be sitting for the HKDSE in some subjects as private candidates MUST apply via JUPAS AND via their respective schools as school applicants.
  4. Applicants with HKDSE results and other qualifications (such as GCE) should normally apply via JUPAS (assessment on applications via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKDSE).  However, if their “other qualifications” alone would also make them eligible for application, they may apply via JUPAS or directly to institutions, but not both in the same academic year.
Bachelor’s Degree Programmes (For Applicants with HKALE results)
  1. All applicants (school and non-school applicants) who apply for admission to the full-time government-funded 3-year bachelor's degree programmes offered by the 8 JUPAS participating-institutions and to the 3-year full-time non-government-funded bachelor's degree programmes offered by OUHK on the strength of HKALE will be considered only on the basis of their HKALE.
  2. All school applicants as in (a) above MUST apply via their respective schools.
  3. School applicants who may be sitting for the HKALE in some subjects as private candidates MUST apply via JUPAS AND via their respective schools as school applicants.
  4. Applicants with HKALE results and other qualifications (such as GCE) should normally apply via JUPAS (assessment on applications via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKALE).  However, if their “other qualifications” alone would also make them eligible for application, they may apply via JUPAS or directly to institutions, but not both in the same academic year.
Associate Degree / Higher Diploma Programmes (For Applicants with HKALE and/or HKDSE results)
  1. Applicants with HKALE or HKDSE results may apply via JUPAS for admission to the full-time government-funded associate degree programmes offered by CityU, and full-time government-funded higher diploma programmes offered by HKIEd and PolyU on the strength of their HKALE or HKDSE results.
  2. All school applicants as in (a) above MUST apply via their respective schools.
  3. School applicants who may be sitting for the HKALE or HKDSE in some subjects as private candidates MUST apply via JUPAS AND via their respective schools as school applicants.
  4. Applicants with both HKALE / HKDSE results and other qualifications (such as GCE) should normally apply via JUPAS (assessment on applications via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKALE or HKDSE).  However, if their “other qualifications” alone would also make them eligible for application, they may apply via JUPAS or directly to institutions, but not both in the same academic year.

Applications in 2013 and beyond
  1. Students who re-take HKALE and with HKALE results only should apply for admission to institutions via non-JUPAS channel.  Institutions might consider advanced standing for such applicants.
  2. Students with HKDSE results only should apply for admission to institutions via the JUPAS channel.
  3. Students with a combination of HKALE and HKDSE results, and HKDSE results alone which would also make them eligible for application to the study programmes offered via JUPAS could apply either via JUPAS or directly to institutions, but not both in the same academic year.  Assessment of such applicants applying via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKDSE only.
  4. Students with a combination of HKALE and HKDSE results which together may make them eligible for application to the institutions should apply directly to institutions.

Q: If I am currently enrolled in a full-time government-funded programme at another tertiary institution and wish to make an application on the strength of my HKALE results, should I apply to HKBU through JUPAS?
A: No. You should not apply through JUPAS. If you are currently enrolled as a full-time or sandwich degree student in any one of the eight JUPAS institutions (even if you are applying on the strength of your current or past HKALE results), you are required to apply direct to the University. For details please visit Applying on the basis of Qualifications other than HKALE/HKDSE (Non-JUPAS / Direct Application) on our Non-JUPAS website.

Q: If I am a JUPAS applicant, can I submit supplementary documents to HKBU directly?
A: The University will assess each application on equal grounds and admission is based on each individual's merits. As all necessary information on applicants is transferred from the JUPAS Office, there is no need for applicants to submit any additional information for our consideration.

Selection Criteria

General

Q: What is the assessment weighting for HKALE and HKCEE subjects when admission is considered?
A: The assessment weighting for HKALE and HKCEE subjects varies with study programmes. In general, for study programmes that do not require interviews, the assessment weighting for HKALE subjects and HKCEE subjects is around 70-90% and 10-30% respectively.

Q: What subject(s) carry more weight when admission is considered?
A: The assessment weighting for HKALE/HKCEE subjects varies according to each programme. For programmes with HKALE and/or HKCEE subjects indicated in the entrance requirements, the required/preferred subjects are likely to carry more weight. Please note that your HKALE and HKCEE grades alone will not determine whether you will be admitted to a particular study programme. Other factors that will take into consideration include banding of choice, information contained in your application, interviews (if applicable), overall grades achieved by other applicants in the current year, and the number of applicantions made to the programme.

Q: Will I be admitted if I obtained excellent HKALE results but failed AS Use of English?
A: No. An applicant will not be considered for admission if he/she has failed to meet the University admissions requirements. To be eligible for admission, applicants are required to satisfy both the University and programme entrance requirements. However, admission is competitive, and an applicant's ability to satisfy the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission. For details of University/programme admissions requirements, please click here.

Results Obtained in Combined Sittings

Q: Does HKBU consider HKCEE/HKALE results obtained in different sittings?
A: HKBU does consider HKCEE/HKALE results obtained in multiple sittings. In cases of multiple sittings, the best two sittings will be combined when admission is considered.#

For HKCEE, students must obtain Level 2/Grade E or above in at least 6 subjects including Chinese Language or an alternative language (other than Chinese and English) and English Language* (Syllabus B), with at least 5 subjects in a single sitting. Alternatively 5 subjects in a single sitting are acceptable if the total of these 5 grades is not less than 8 points. ("Level 5* to 2" or "Grade A to E" shall be awarded 5 to 1 points respectively).

For HKALE, a minimum of Grade E or above in Use of English, Chinese Language and Culture, plus 2 AL subjects or 1 AL subject and 2 AS subjects obtained in a single sitting or any two sittings are required.

* For English Language attempted before 2007, Grade C in English Language (Syllabus A) is considered equivalent to Grade E in English Language (Syllabus B).

# For example, if an applicant attempted HKCEE in year 2004, 2005 and 2006. The three combinations of results will be:

  1. 2004 HKCEE results + 2005 HKCEE results;
  2. 2004 HKCEE results + 2006 HKCEE results;
  3. 2005 HKCEE results + 2006 HKCEE results.
Among the three combinations, the best combination will be considered for score calculation purposes. This process also applies to HKALE results.

Q: As a Form 5 / Form 7 repeater, will I be 'disadvantaged' when applying for admission?
A: Normally, repeaters will not be 'disadvantaged' when admission is considered as public examinations results obtained in multiple sittings are considered equally.

Interview/Test Arrangements

Q: Do all HKBU programmes require interviews/tests?
A: No. Not all programmes require interviews/tests. Interview/test arrangements may vary with programmes and may change every year. Please click here to view more details of JUPAS interview/test arrangements.

Q: Is it necessary to place programmes that require interview in my Band A choices?
A: Selection criteria for interviews vary with programmes. Banding of programme choices alone does not determine whether you are invited to interview. Other factors considered include public examination results, information contained in your application, overall grades achieved by other applicants, and the number of applicants applied to the programme. However, when the number of applicants far exceeds the interview quota, we may only invite those applicants who have placed the particular programme in a higher band (the majority from Band A applicants and a few from Band B applicants) for interview.

Q: When will the admission interviews/tests be held?
A: Admission interviews/tests will be held before and/or after the announcement of HKALE results. Please click here to view more details on JUPAS interview/test arrangements.

Q: How will I be notified if I am selected for interviews?
A: We will send you a SMS message and an email notification with interview details, such as date, time, venue, etc. Please ensure that your mobile number, email and postal addresses submitted to the JUPAS Office are up to date and correct.

Q: What can I do if I cannot attend the interview arranged by HKBU?
A: If you are unable to attend an interview or test, please email or call us on 3411 5027 / 3411 7358 in advance so that alternative arrangements can be made for you, if possible.

Q: Will I be invited for interview if I have been nominated under the JUPAS Sub-system for School Principal's Nominations?

  1. they have selected HKBU programme(s) in their JUPAS Band A choices;
  2. they have met/will fulfil the University and Programme admission requirements for the programme(s) mentioned in (a).

Please note that interviews of applicants under this JUPAS Sub-system will be held in mid June of the year of admission, subject to confirmation. The interview date for each invited applicant will be stated in the email invitation.

Admission Offer/HKALE Appeal Cases

Q: I was given an offer in the Main Round by another tertiary institution. Will HKBU consider me in the subsequent round(s) of offer if I decline that offer?
A: HKBU is not able to consider you in subsequent rounds of offer if you were given an offer in the Main Round / Clearing Round, no matter whether you accept that offer. The offer you receive in the Main Round is your best possible offer. You are required to confirm your acceptance at the institution concerned. If you fail to confirm your acceptance of an offer, you are regarded as having declined your offer. In such an event, your record will be deleted from the JUPAS computer system and you will not be reconsidered for admission to any other study programmes offered under JUPAS in the same year.

Q: What should I do if I do not receive an offer in the JUPAS Main Round?
A: If you do not receive an offer in the JUPAS Main Round, it is NOT necessary for you to submit anything or check with the University about vacancies. Our computer database contains all information we need to know about ALL applicants for admission purposes. You will be reconsidered for admission to any programmes still having vacancies. Offers will be made within the applicant's 25 choices in the Clearing Round and can be made outside the applicant's 25 choices during the subsequent "Free-for -all" Round(s). Offers made in the Clearing and Free-for-all Rounds will be published on the JUPAS website. Successful applicants are required to indicate acceptance via the web. Please note that only applicants who are not offered a place in the Main Round will be considered in the Clearing and Free-for-all Rounds.

Q: Should I accept the Main Round Offer while I am appealing against my HKALE results?
A: You are advised to first accept the Main Round offer while you are waiting for the outcome of your HKALE appeal results.
If your overall HKALE grades are revised as a result of your appeal and you wish to be reconsidered for an offer or a "better" offer, you should approach the JUPAS Office according to the schedule stipulated by the JUPAS Office. You should then submit a request for reconsideration of your application, regardless of whether you have been made an offer in the Main Round or not.
