JUPAS (HKALE) Applicants

University Admission Requirements/Policies

Entry to an undergraduate programme of study at the University requires prospective students to satisfy both the general University and specific departmental admission requirements.

General University Admission Requirements

Degree Programme HKAL/AS Requirements

Grade E or above in any two sittings in
  1. either 2 AL subjects or 1 AL subject and 2 AS subjects (other than Use of English and Chinese Language & Culture), and
  2. AS Chinese Language & Culture(1), and
  3. AS Use of English(2)
     

Degree Programme HKCEE Requirements

Level 2/Grade E or above in at least 6 subjects (3) including Chinese Language or an alternative language (other than Chinese and English) and English Language (4) with at least 5 subjects in a single sitting.

Footnotes:
(1) Those without a Chinese Language qualification at HKCEE level (substituted by an alternative language other than Chinese and English) must have an additional AL/AS subject to substitute for AS Chinese Language & Culture.
 
(2) Equivalents to Grade D and Grade E in AS Use of English are listed below:
  1. The following public examination results were recognised by the University as equivalent to Grade E in AS Use of English:
    1. a score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 80 (internet-based) or above in TOEFL; or
    2. a score of 6 or above in International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Academic Level; or
    3. grade C or above in GCE O-Level/GCSE/IGCSE English; or
    4. grade E or above in GCE AS Level or AL Level English; or
    5. grade III in Joint Matriculation Board (JMB) University Test in English (or a pass in the NEAB University Entrance Test in English for Speakers of Other Languages).
       
  2. The following public examination results were recognised by the University as equivalent to Grade D in AS Use of English:
    1. a score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 80 (internet-based) or above in TOEFL; or
    2. a score of 7 or above in International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Academic Level; or
    3. grade C or above in GCE O-Level/GCSE/IGCSE English; or
    4. grade D or above in GCE AS Level or AL Level English.

If you have academic results other than HKCEE / HKALE and / or music qualifications, you are required to enter in the JUPAS online application system only the entry with the highest level / score attained no later than 30 March 2012 (by 11:59 pm). Certified true copies (i.e. NOT the original documents) of these qualifications must be submitted to the JUPAS Office no later than 13 April 2012 (by 5:00 pm). Please DO NOT send the original documents or copies to the University.

* Certified true copies of these certificates not received by the JUPAS Office / verified by school (if you are a school applicant) on or before 13 April 2012 (by 5:00 pm) will NOT be taken into consideration.

(3) 5 subjects are acceptable if the total of these 5 grades is not less than 8 points ("Level 5* to 2" or "Grade A to E" shall be given points 5 to 1 respectively).

(4) For English Language attempted before 2007, Grade C in English Language (Syllabus A) is considered equivalent to Grade E in English Language (Syllabus B).


Calculation of scores for applicants with more than one sitting in HKALE / HKCEE

  1. The best two sittings of HKALE/HKCEE results are combined from all sittings of HKALE/HKCEE results.
     
  2. The higher grade of a subject will be considered if the subject is found in the combined two sittings.
     
  3. For HKALE, the following AL/AS subjects are counted in the score calculation: AS Use of English, AS Chinese Language & Culture, the 1st AL subject and the 2nd AL subject (or 2 AS subjects).
     
  4. In some programmes, the calculation of scores may vary.
