Broad-based Admissions
The University adopts a policy of broad-based admissions for most of its programmes. This has resulted in the offering of 17 programmes for the 4-year cohort in 2012 entry and thereafter, whereby students will have a post-entry choice of major. The number of majors offered by the University is about 50. Under broad-based admissions, students can choose to study in their desired Faculty/School/Academy and enhance their overall understanding of the discipline in the first year. After they have learned more about different aspects of the discipline, they can then make the best choice of major in order to achieve their goals.
The following Faculties/Schools/Academy adopt broad-based admissions:
-
Faculty of Arts
-
School of Business
-
School of Communication
-
Faculty of Science
-
Faculty of Social Sciences

About JUPAS
The Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) is designed to assist students with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) results and is the main application route for admission to:
-
full-time or sandwich Bachelor's degree programmes and some associate degree/higher diploma programmes offered by the following 8 JUPAS member-institutions and funded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) through the University Grants Committee (UGC):
-
City University of Hong Kong (CityU)
-
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)
-
Lingnan University (LU)
-
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)
-
The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd)
-
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU)
-
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
-
The University of Hong Kong (HKU)
-
non-government-funded full-time Bachelor's degree programmes offered by the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK).
Who SHOULD apply through JUPAS for admission?
Applications SHOULD be made through JUPAS if you belong to one of the following categories:
-
All applicants (school and non-school applicants) who wish to apply for admission to the full-time government-funded 4-year bachelor's degree programmes offered by the 8 JUPAS participating-institutions and to the 4-year full-time non-government-funded bachelor's degree programmes offered by OUHK on the strength of HKDSE should apply via JUPAS. Such applicants will be considered only on the basis of their HKDSE.
-
All school applicants as in (a) above MUST apply via their respective schools.
-
School applicants who may be sitting for the HKDSE in some subjects as private candidates MUST apply via JUPAS AND via their respective schools as school applicants.
-
Applicants with HKDSE results and other qualifications (such as GCE) should normally apply via JUPAS. (Assessment on applications via JUPAS will be based primarily on HKDSE.) However, if their “other qualifications” alone would also make them eligible for application, they may apply via JUPAS or directly to institutions, but not both in the same academic year.
Who SHOULD NOT apply through JUPAS for admission?
Applications SHOULD NOT be made through JUPAS for admission if you belong to one of the following categories:
-
Currently enrolled in a full-time or sandwich bachelor's degree programme in one of nine JUPAS participating institution(s), regardless of whether the application is made on the strength of HKDSE results. If applicants wish to apply through JUPAS, they will be required to withdraw from the institution. If you do not wish to withdraw from the institution, you should not apply through JUPAS but make a direct application to the University.
-
You do not have any past HKDSE results, nor will you be sitting for the 2013 HKDSE. If you apply through JUPAS, your JUPAS application will not be processed.
For information on direct application for admission to the University, please see: Direct (Non-JUPAS) Admission Scheme
